Project Cutlass Vought F7U Restoration

A Vought F7U Cutlass restoration is on its way to fly again one day, thanks to the efforts of Project Cutlass.  Al Casby is the owner of two F7U Cutlass airframes, which are BuNo 129622 and BuNo 129554.  Mr. Casby has owned 622 since the early 1980’s, but it is a “badly damaged partial aircraft, usable for parts only”, he recently acquired 544 which previously belonged to Tom Cathcart and is currently stored at Paine Field in Washington State.  Mr. Casby hopes to bring 544 from Paine Field to Phoenix, Arizona to begin the restoration that he has been waiting to carry out for 44 years.   This is no easy task.  With a 21 foot width, and a high tail height, transportation is a difficult task. The aircraft cannot be completely disassembled without risking compromising the integrity of the airframe.  Mr. Casby stated, “Vought strongly suggested that neither the tails or the center-section wings ever be removed from the aircraft, going so far as to implore that should that need arise the airframe should be stricken.  There is no corrosion noted anywhere that would indicate a need for removal of these, so I do not want to remove them just to effect transport.” Have no fear, these challenges will definitely be overcome.  Check back soon for more updates!

Doc’s Kickstarter Campaign A Success

100docDoc’s Friends have announced that they have secured the necessary funding to complete their newly restored B-29’s flight testing.  As of October 22, 2015 over $140,000 out of the necessary $137,500 for flight testing has been pledged by almost 800 backers on Kickstarter.  With over $60,000 pledged in two days.  Doc’s Friends expressed their thanks to their supporters by saying “We DID IT: Words cannot express the excitement and gratitude felt by our team right now.”  With a week still remaining, all pledges over the goal will go towards maintaining Doc as a flying museum. The late John Desmond of Chalfont, Pennsylvania was a successful businessman and a collector of vintage aircraft from the 1920’s and early 1930’s.  Mr. Desmond’s collection of aircraft, engines, and other small parts represent over 45 years of collecting.  The collection of aircraft consist of a Pitcairn Super Mailwing PA-6, a Travel Air S-6000-B, Waco CTO, Waco GXC, an ultra-rare Kinner Playboy R-5, and the only soon to be completed wooden Lockheed Vega just to name few.  Due to Mr. Desmond’s passing the entire collection is going to be sold.

Some of the aircraft have been sold, but it is not too late to own one of these one-of-a-kind aircraft.  There will be a public auction in Chalfont, Pennsylvania on October 9th and 10th 2015.  According to Heritage Aircraft, bidders at the auction will have the opportunity to bid on complete aircraft, aircraft restoration projects, engines, propellers, and vintage aircraft instruments.  For More information visit:
